Baobab Oil | The Tree of Life

Ingredient Highlight: Baobab Oil

Adansonia digitata, aka Baobab, is one of the largest sub-Saharan botanicals. In South Africa, the baobab is steeped in legend and used for its various nutritional and medicinal benefits from the leaves bark, fruit and seeds. Its bark used for rope and cloth; its trunk acts as storage; the edible leaves and fruit provide medicinal remedies for illness. It’s also one of the longest living tress on the planet with trunks that can reach a maximum diameter of 60 feet and in some cases hold up to 40 people! It comes as no surprise that it’s known by the locals as the “Tree of Life.”

Baobab trees have incredibly wide fibrous trunks with unusual root-like branches and are often referred to as the upside-down tree. The oil comes from the seeds of the fruit and has remarkable benefits for the skin. Let’s take a look at the oil profile.

The oil has an interesting fatty acid profile with a balance of oleic and linoleic acids (omega 6 & 9), and stabilizing amount of palmitic acid (omega 7). Rich in phytonutrients and vitamins A, D and E, it can rejuvenate mature skin by minimizing trans-epidermal water loss and supporting collagen production.

Baobab absorbs quickly into the skin without a greasy film making it great for both skin and hair. It’s a very stable oil meaning it doesn’t oxidize or go rancid easily. Loaded with plant sterols which mimic the effects of cholesterol in the skin, and provide increased elasticity and anti-wrinkling benefits. A helpful oil for repairing skin barrier integrity, which is essential for healthy skin.

Studies confirm it can soften and strengthen the skin with its regenerative, toning and moisturizing properties. It's also highly regarded for its ability to soothe cuts, burns and reduce painful skin conditions. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties make it an excellent choice for damaged/dehydrated skin, acne, eczema and rosacea conditions.
